Courtesy Call on Prime Minister Kishida by Dr. Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA) (Summary)

On May 2, commencing at 10:10 a.m. (5:10 p.m., Japan Time), Mr. KISHIDA Fumio, Prime Minister of Japan, received a courtesy call from Dr. Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), for approximately 10 minutes, at the Headquarters of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The overview is as follows.
1. At the outset, Prime Minister Kishida expressed his gratitude for the IEA’s cooperation with the G7 under Japan’s Presidency last year, as well as Japan’s intention to continue to work closely together with the IEA in this milestone year marking the 60th anniversary of Japan’s accession to the OECD and the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the IEA. Furthermore, Prime Minister Kishida stated that the IEA’s role is of the utmost importance for energy security, and that there is a need to advance practical energy transitions following various pathways according to the individual circumstances of each country and region so as to achieve energy security and economic growth at the same time.
2. In response, Executive Director Birol expressed his gratitude for Japan’s cooperation with the IEA to date, his great appreciation for Japan’s leadership in energy security and energy transition, including the outcomes achieved under Japan’s G7 Presidency last year, and the IEA’s intention to further deepen cooperation with Japan.
